The car that could change the affordable EV conversation just arrived. Kia unveiled the EV3 at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, and it delivers exactly what the market has been asking for: an electric vehicle with real range, fast charging, and a price tag that doesn't require a second mortgage.
Starting under $35,000 before any state incentives, the EV3 enters a segment that's about to get very competitive. The all-new Chevy Bolt is back. The Nissan Leaf has been redesigned. What the EV3 brings to the table
The EV3 rides on the same E-GMP platform that underpins the EV6, EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6. That's important because E-GMP is one of the best EV architectures in the industry, offering 800-volt electrical architecture even in this smaller, more affordable package.
Up to 320 miles of estimated range. That's for the Long Range battery option, which Kia expects to be the most popular configuration. Available all-wheel drive. The base model is front-wheel drive with a single motor, but Kia is offering a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant across multiple trim levels. AWD adds traction in wet or snowy conditions and provides noticeably quicker acceleration.
Five trim levels. Kia is launching the EV3 with a full range of options — from a well-equipped base model to a fully loaded top trim — so buyers can find the right balance of features and price. Standard equipment across all trims includes a digital instrument cluster, an infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a suite of driver-assistance features.
The size and packaging
The EV3 is a subcompact crossover, roughly the size of a Kia Seltos or Honda HR-V. It's smaller than the EV6, which makes it ideal for urban environments where parking space is limited and maneuverability matters.
Don't let “subcompact” fool you, though. The flat EV floor and clever packaging mean the interior is more spacious than the exterior dimensions suggest. Kia has a reputation for punching above its weight in interior room, and early reports from the auto show floor suggest the EV3 continues that tradition. Rear legroom is adequate for adults, and the cargo area is competitive for the class.

How it stacks up against the new Chevy Bolt
This is the comparison everyone will be making. The reborn Chevy Bolt is Kia's most direct competitor, and it's a serious contender.
The Bolt offers an EPA-rated 262 miles of range from its base battery, which is solid but falls short of the EV3's 320-mile Long Range option. Pricing is expected to be comparable, with the Bolt starting around $33,000.
Where the EV3 holds a clear advantage is charging speed. The Bolt uses a 400-volt architecture, which means slower DC fast charging — typically 45–50 minutes from 10% to 80%. The EV3's 800-volt system cuts that time significantly. If you plan to road trip or rely on public charging regularly, this is a meaningful difference.
The Bolt counters with the advantage of being manufactured in the United States, which may qualify it for additional incentives depending on how future policy develops. It's also backed by GM's extensive dealer network.
In terms of driving experience, the EV6 has been praised for its handling and refinement, and the EV3 is expected to carry forward those characteristics. The Bolt has historically been a perfectly competent daily driver but not one that excites driving enthusiasts.
Both are excellent vehicles. The choice likely comes down to whether you prioritize charging speed (EV3 wins), range (EV3 Long Range wins), price (roughly even), or domestic manufacturing and dealer network (Bolt wins).

The EV3 is expected to arrive at US dealerships in the second half of 2026. Kia hasn't announced exact pricing for each trim level yet, but the starting point under $35,000 has been confirmed.
