EV road trips are not the same experience as gas car road trips — and pretending otherwise sets you up for frustration. A gas car refuels in 5 minutes anywhere. However, the charging network in 2026 is dramatically better than even two years ago. Tesla's Supercharger network now includes over 60,000 stalls in North America and is open to non-Tesla vehicles via the NACS adapter standard. Speed matters enormously. An EV rated at 300 miles EPA range at 65 mph might achieve only 240 miles at 80 mph. Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed — driving 80 instead of 65 reduces range by roughly 20%. Calculate your highway range like this: Take your EPA range, multiply by 0.80 for highway speed adjustment, then multiply by 0.85 for temperature if it's cold. Step 3: The 10–80% Charging Rule

EV batteries charge fastest between 10% and 80% state of charge. Below 10%, the battery management system limits charging speed to protect cells. Above 80%, charging slows dramatically — the last 20% can take as long as the first 80%.

The practical implication: Don't charge to 100% at road trip stops. Charge to 80%, drive to the next stop, arrive at 10–15%, charge to 80% again. This “10–80–10–80” pattern minimizes total charging time across the trip.

Step 4: Build in Buffer

Never plan a route where you arrive at a charger below 10%. Equipment failure, traffic detours, headwinds, and unexpected speed changes all consume more energy than planned. Build 15–20% buffer into every leg of the trip.

The “Plan B” rule: For every charging stop, identify a backup charger within 20 miles. If your planned stop is broken (it happens — roughly 20% of public chargers have reliability issues on any given day), you need a fallback without panicking. ABRP shows alternative chargers along your route.

Mistake 1: Driving at 80+ mph to “make up time.” This backfires spectacularly. Higher speed = shorter range = more charging stops = more total time than if you'd driven 70 mph with fewer stops.

Mistake 2: Waiting until the battery is nearly empty to find a charger. Arriving at 3% with the nearest backup charger 40 miles away is genuinely stressful. Arrive at chargers with 15–20% remaining.

Mistake 4: Planning a 12-hour gas car drive as a 12-hour EV drive. Add 60–90 minutes for charging stops on a full-day drive. A trip that takes 10 hours in a gas car takes approximately 11–11.5 hours in an EV with fast charging. That's a modest difference — but only if you plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
